Writing
It is our intent at Waulud Primary School to provide pupils with a high-quality education in English that will teach pupils to speak, read and write fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others effectively.
At Waulud Primary School, writing is a crucial part of our curriculum. All children are provided with many opportunities to develop and apply their writing skills across the curriculum. Positive attitudes towards writing are developed through the use of stimulating and immersive learning experiences including visits from published authors and illustrators and learning outside the classroom. The Primary Writing Project principles are embedded across the school so that oracy and storytelling are placed at the heart of writing development. There is an emphasis on the development of vocabulary, so that the pupils’ written language is rich and aspirational. A wide range of texts are used to broaden pupils experience of literature and provide them with inspiration in their own writing.
We expect all our pupils to leave Waulud Primary School with the writing skills which will allow them to fully express themselves and flourish as young, imaginative writers.
We prepare our Early Years pupils for school readiness by following curriculum guidance set out in Development Matters (see pages 74 to 83).
In Key Stages 1 and 2, we follow the National Curriculum Writing Programmes of Study. These consist of two dimensions:
- transcription (spelling and handwriting)
- composition (articulating ideas and structuring them in speech and writing)
Our teaching focuses on developing pupils’ competence in both dimensions. In addition, pupils are taught how to plan, revise and evaluate their writing.
