Mathematics Intent Statement
At Waulud Primary School we believe that mathematics provides a
foundation for understanding the world and plays a vital role in allowing
children to access all other subjects in the curriculum. We deliver
learning tasks that are creative and engaging by ensuring that all lesson
sequences consist of concrete, pictorial and abstract forms of learning.
We stretch our learners through effective challenges and address
misconceptions and gaps to accelerate the learning. We place high
importance on developing children’s basic skills, such as, counting,
number bonds and multiplication and division facts as this enables them
to solve problems accurately.
We encourage children to make rich connections across mathematical
ideas to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in
solving challenging problems. As maths is essential in the wider world,
we ensure that our children know the purpose behind their learning and
apply their knowledge to their everyday lives. We aim for all of our
children to have an appreciation of mathematics, understand the power
of it and develop a sense of curiosity and enjoyment about the subject.
