Curriculum intent
At Waulud Primary, we are committed to improving the life chances for our children so that they can achieve as well as they possibly can in the future. Our children are part of a diverse and rich community however social mobility and aspirations are low. Deprivation in our area is high-ranked top 10% of most deprived areas in the country and 19% of our families reside in the top 5% most deprived lower, super output areas nationally. Many of our children arrive at school with poor language acquisition, low social and emotional development and weak academic skills.
Our curriculum is bespoke and addresses these barriers to allow our children to be able to develop both academically and personally.
Our curriculum aims:
Teaching a rich web of knowledge underpins the curriculum and enables the application and the capacity for pupils to learn even more through practise and repetition in different contexts. Through the depth of our curriculum, children are able to achieve high standards and become independent, resilient learners who can draw upon many different experiences. Our Waulud values- Pride, Respect, Include, Determined and Encourage- are used to develop a strong sense of self, community and a drive to improve.
Our learning is based on a broad and balanced curriculum which incorporates the National Curriculum. We strive to deliver wide and varied learning experiences and embed the mind-set where all children believe that anything is achievable and everyone has the chance to shine. The ability to learn is underpinned by the teaching of basic skills, knowledge, concepts and values with a vision to prepare our children for life beyond primary school. Through rich learning experiences, we aim to develop children’s curiosity and thirst for new knowledge and experiences. Our intention is to provide long term learning through the revisiting of skills.
Health and wellbeing: prepare our children for a fulfilling future as well as attend to their present needs, hopes, interests and anxieties and promote their mental, emotional and physical welfare. Help them to develop a strong sense of self, build character, resilience and a positive outlook towards life as a moral citizen. Maximise their ability to learn and affect chances for social mobility.
Communication and language: support children in their development of speech and language so that they are able to express themselves and are able to communicate well. Develop children’s ability to process and understand others in order to interact effectively.
Basic skills: revisiting, practising, exploring and embedding the basic skills of reading, writing and mathematics in order to gain greater access to the whole school curriculum and the world beyond. All children have the opportunity to strive towards academic success.
Opportunity, experiences and aspirations: engage children through memorable learning experiences. Develop a curiosity for the world and provide inspiration for creative ideas by allowing children to learn outdoors and develop their imagination. Prepare for life in the 21st Century with an ever changing community.
Our motto of ‘Believe, Achieve and Grow’ helps children to develop positive attitudes towards learning, a growth mind-set and a responsibility for learning and future success.

Each school year, we promise that every child in the school will take part in a range of trips and experiences, as well as having the opportunity to meet ‘expert’ visitors from different fields. We believe that childhood is a very special gift that should be treated with the utmost care. Every child, without exception, is entitled to a set of experiences that they can deposit in a bank of childhood memories to remember and savour for a lifetime. Experiences like…flying a kite…learning how to ride a bike…visiting the National Space Centre…learning basic first aid…visiting a gallery…watching a caterpillar turn into a butterfly!
